Zhang Yimou retrospective at the Filmoteca

 

For the first time, Madrid's Ciné Doré filmoteca will host a retrospective dedicated to Chinese film director Zhang Yimou
His first movie, Red Sorghum, won the Golden Bear at the 1998 Berlin Festival and vaulted Zhang among the internationally acclaimed movie directors. 
Many movies will follow, all of them with his wife, stunning Gong Li, as a main character: Ju Dou in 1989, Wives and Concubines in 1991 (Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival), The Story of Qiu Ju (Golden Lion ) followed by To Live (Grand Prix du Jury at the 94 Cannes Festival) and Shanghai Triad in 1995. His movies all have one thing in common: an extremely refined framed composition.

A wonderful occasion to view (or view again) his masterpieces.

 

Tribute to Jim Jarmusch at Bellas Artes

 

Circulo de Bellas Artes pays tribute to film director Jim Jarmusch by projecting all his movies during the month of January.
Director, actor, composer, film editor, script writer and producer, Jim Jarmush became the rising star of American independent film industry and was awarded with the Caméra d’or at the Cannes festival for his movie Stranger than ParadiseDown by Law, Mystery Train, Dead Man all belong to his impressive filmography.
His movies often portray an accepted marginality combined with an endured solitude. Jarmush uses humour, situation comedy or the absurd to underline the incommunicability between human beings.

Filmoteca Española

In the Cine Doré, you can watch films for just 2,50euros per film or 2,00euros for student price. They are playing a variety of films this month, highlighting Tim Burton films for the family. After 5:30pm on Saturdays in June, kids can watch Alice in Wonderland or The Corpse Bride for free. Other movies include the Big Fish, Frankenweenie, Planet of the Apes or Dark Shadows. Check schedule for language or subtitle availability.

JamesonNotodofilmfest

JamesonNotodofilmfest.com is a short film festival and competition that takes place on the Internet. Over 11 years, more than 9,000 films have been created with an audience of 20 million viewings. The festival works to open the public views of production and distribution of films. This weekend, the theather at the Matadero will be showing all the films nominated for awards for free, as well hold workshops, open discussions and other activities. It is required to register for the Film Market and Film School workshops online, before-hand. 

Sicko

Documentary looking at health care in the United States as provided by profit-oriented health maintenance organizations (HMOs) compared to free, universal care in Canada, the U.K., and France. Moore contrasts U.S. media reports on Canadian care with the experiences of Canadians in hospitals and clinics there. He interviews patients and doctors in the U.K. about cost, quality, and salaries. He examines why Nixon promoted HMOs in 1971, and why the Clintons' reform effort failed in the 1990s. He talks to U.S. ex-pats in Paris about French services, and he takes three 9/11 clean-up volunteers, who developed respiratory problems, to Cuba for care. He asks of Americans, "Who are we?"
